IGNITING THE CREATIVE POTENTIAL OF STUDENTS TOWARD ENGINEERING, SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS
Additional Grant Project Descriptions:
Allegan County Math/Science/Technical Center, Allegan, MI - Sound engineering is the topic of one Allegan County project. Students experiment on a topic of high interest, stereo speakers, among other things, to study this rapidly developing field. Other Math Science Center projects include the Sun Sprint Solar Car project and the Trash Bash car project, both culminating in a great day at the US 131 Motor Speedway.
Eastern Michigan University Pre-Engineering Training Lab - CEF dollars support the Project Lead the Way teacher training program with classroom equipment and staff development workshops.
Regina High, South Euclid, OH - Along with their IVD car, the students and teachers at Regina High School have invested their CEF funds in an engineering center complete with curriculum and equipment.
Mecosta/Osceola Math and Science Center, Big Rapids, MI CATIA/DELMIA software and IVD have brought together two unique groups of students, one from the Math Science Center and the other from the Career Tech Center.
Traverse City Central High School, Traverse City, MI - Traverse City Central has become a hub of underwater engineering with their strong participaton in the MATE program. These students are designing underwater remote operated vehicles that can retrieve objects and perform tasks while the operator views it all through a powerful waterproof camera. Physics teacher, Keith Forton has conducted ROV workshops for CEF, sharing his experience with teachers from around the state.
University High School, Ferndale, MI - University High not only participates in the IVD project, but created their school’s computer lab themselves! Through a year long class, students built state of the art computers from the nuts and bolts on up. The Digital Career Roadmap is another CEF funded project that crosses curriculum as students learn to interview, research, film, program, and create web-capable materials to assist other students in their pursuit of technological careers.
Lakers/Pigeon School Districts, Pigeon, MI - The Huron ISD sponsors an IVD car for students across the thumb area, but within the Laker Schools there are other exciting CEF projects taking place. Project Powerhouse revolves around alternative energies, with students learning about wind turbines, creating alternative fuels from student grown plants, solar panels and more. The Laker Middle School has created an Introduction to Engineering class that gives each student the opportunity to learn more about potential careers in the industry by participating in hands-on, immersive experiences.
WGTE Toledo Public Broadcasting/Toledo Public Schools, OH - Through its community outreach and education programs, this PBS station partnered with CEF to provide exciting mathematics workshops and kits filled with manipulatives for classroom use to over 100 TPS teachers.
Southfield High School, Southfield, MI - The Southfield Public School District partnered with CEF to support two classrooms and a greenhouse to develop new pre-engineering classes at Southfield High School. These students are researching alternative energy systems and creating a miniature “Greener Southfield” along with their IVD car project.
Plainwell High School, Plainwell, MI - State of the art biotechnology equipment has found its way into the hands of eager students in Plainwell’s new science labs. These students are learning college level techniques and research topics while conducting real-life CSI style experiments. They will also explore alternative fuels as the program develops.
Dan Beard Council Boy Scouts Cincinnati, Ohio - The Dan Beard Council is providing experience based engineering education for inner city youth through the benchmarked “simple machines” and their correlation to roller coasters and rockets.
Miller Elementary School, Center Line, MI - Miller is partnering with CEF and Purdue University to conduct research on the early introduction of engineering and its effect on students, specifically girls. While this building is becoming an International Baccalaureate School, students are immersed in hands-on, relevant experiments and projects that meet benchmarks and make learning meaningful.
Toledo Public Schools, Lansing Public Schools, Houghton Public Schools - These districts chose to adopt the Tivitz Math Strategy game to ignite their students’ interest in mathematics and improve their arithmetic skills. Students and teachers were taught to play by CEF Chief Scientist, Dr. Kathryn Clark. Dr. Clark shared her life’s experiences traveling the globe on behalf of NASA and the relevance that her mathematical skills played in her success.
Garfield Elementary School, Flint, MI - Garfield Elementary chose a “Getting Around” theme to excite and educate their urban student population to various modes of transportation and the larger world around them. Each grade adopted a type of transportation, researched, built models, and finally experienced it...students rode on buses, trains, tall ships and even planes and helicopters! Science scores have increased, AYP has been met, and students are engaged! Garfield also started an after school Tivitz Club for fourth through sixth grade students.
