GPS and Geocaching

IGNITING THE CREATIVE POTENTIAL OF STUDENTS TOWARD ENGINEERING, SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS

Global positioning systems have entered the mainstream through recreation and daily travel with handheld or onboard GPS units.  CEF has purchased a classroom set of handheld Magellan GPS units that are available for check-out by members of our educational network.  These units can be incorporated in your existing classroom curriculum and enhance your students learning by engaging them in this new technology.

Adding “geocaches” (hidden treasures located by designated coordinates with the gps unit) related to your lesson creates endless possibilities.  Geocaches can contain questions, puzzles, components, or prizes!  GPS and geocaching crosses curriculum...add to your social studies, language arts, math or science lessons.  CEF and our resident expert, Mike Olsen of the Oakland Math Science Center, has created a series of lessons for secondary teachers to meet state standards and benchmarks through the use of GPS and geocaching, across the curriculum.  These lessons also include easy to follow directions for the classroom teacher to understand and use the GPS units.
